I Am What I Wore

One girl's quest to streamline and catalog her nostalgia-laden wardrobe.

One More Time, Again!

Item: Sweater Color/Fabric: Chocolate/bronze, cashmere/acetate Designer: Theory Where Purchased: Last Call Neiman Marcus Years Owned: One
What a lovely and relaxing Thanksgiving Day I had this year! And I have made a vow to myself to be more thankful for all the blessings I have each and everyday. I am well aware that I take too many things and too many people entirely for granted. I have a very charmed life, and I could not be more filled with gratitude.
A few months back I had decided that I didn’t like writing about a particular item on the very day that I wore it. Tonight I just don’t seem to have a choice. I can’t think of anything else to write about!
This sweater was a wounded warrior that I found on the Damaged rack at Last Call. It had a rather large hole in one sleeve, and a few pulls, and so it was marked down from $455 to $14.99. And, charitable soul that I am, I had to rescue it!
Nate and I had met our friend Chris, who we knew from our days at MSU, at Woodbury Common. He mostly just gaped in amazement while I shopped, and he was a nice distraction for Nate.
Chris, however, did not like this sweater. I held it up for them after I had purchased it, as my Find Of The Day.
“Oh, Kerry, you need to return that,” he told me. “There’s a hole in it!”
“I Know,” I said. “I’m going to fix it.”
Chris was horrified. “You bought something damaged? On purpose?”
I tried to explain that I could not even make a sweater of that quality and size for $14.99. Unthinkable. I told him that if I wasn’t able to fix it, I’d just wear it around the house.
Because, you see, it’s kind of like a fancy Snuggie. The picture just doesn’t really show how much sweater there actually is in this, but it folds and drapes and wraps around and ties. It’s complicated, and takes some practice. But there are so many ways to wear it! Plus, it sparkles a little. It’s pretty wonderful!
It mended very easily, too. There’s not even a trace of the hole, or the pulls. It was a nice soft and cozy sweater to wear on a chilly Thanksgiving Day.
I’ve worn this one other time. It was around this same time of year last year, and I was going to New York City to see Next To Normal.
We had a nice group of wonderful people: myself (husbandless, as Nate was in India), Kevin and Michael, Lizzie, Maria, Donna, Diana, and Rich. We took the Metro North, and it was the most delightful train ride I’ve ever had! Here’s Kevin, Lizzie, and me on the train:

I can’t remember whose idea it was to bring wine on the train, but it was brilliant!
We had an awesome sushi dinner, which I always appreciate, because Nate won’t eat it and so I don’t have it often, and then we headed for the show.
This time, I had actually listened to the soundtrack a few times before seeing the show. I remember being completely captivated by the music, but I had no concept of how powerful the show would be.
I was sitting next to Liz, and we were both sobbing by the fifth song. And then I cried for the entire rest of the show. I think I lost about four pounds in tears. Seriously.
I empathized with every character. There was not a single song which didn’t move me in some way. I loved the set and the lighting. It was just a phenomenal show.
And oh, the music! It has been on a nearly constant loop in my car for an entire year now. I haven’t gotten tired of it yet, and I think that now I’ve listened to it more than I have any other musical. It’s just so good.
I even had to see it twice; I had to take Nate! He cried, too.
Anyway, after the show we ended up getting the most expensive hot chocolate in the world at a hotel by the train station. I’m pretty sure the hot chocolate cost more than my sweater. It was super delicious, though!
That was just a perfect day: wonderful friends, great food, astounding theatre, and a warm and fabulous sweater. What more could a girl ask for?

**I think this sweater is amazing. Plus, it bears the fruit of my labor. It shall stay.

I love that sweater! I remember complimenting you on it, I also remember bringing the wine, snapping that fine photo, and frantically searching for a sushi place until Michael pulled out the coolest Iphone restaurant finding app I’ve ever seen! You HAVE to keep this one, if not give me your ebay link so I can start bidding!!

Are you even allowed to bring wine on a train? I didn’t think that was legal. Anyway, that’s a really nice sweater and it looks so lovely and warm and fuzzy, and I would keep it! Especially since you fixed the holes and they aren’t noticeable anymore.

sad to say, my memory of clothes is pathetic. I would have never remembered this was the same sweater i saw at the show just two nights ago, but i loved it two nights ago – you looked absolutely lovely and warm and protected from the fall winds…and it was easy to disrobe next to the fire! Keep. πŸ˜‰
