I Am What I Wore

One girl's quest to streamline and catalog her nostalgia-laden wardrobe.

The Day Of Limited Remembering.

Item: Dress Color/Fabric: Black/white, Silk/chiffon Designer: Express Years Owned: 4

Today I unexpectedly got called in to work at Next, and it was such a splendid way to break up my week! It is nice to get away from the sweat, and the sweatpants, and the sweaty people once in a while and be surrounded by shiny, beautiful things.
It’s just another type of playground for me.
And today I got to do a lot of playing!
A stylish and beautiful young woman came in looking for an outfit for an amazing, possibly life changing event.
I got to help her pick out a totally sexy, rockin’ outfit, and it was such fun!
It turns out that she is a musician, and very talented. Her name is Sandrine, and I think you should check out her website, here.
Days like this make me want to just work at the boutique full time, and put clothes on beautiful people.
This dress is something I wore on a not so fun day at Next. Two years ago, when I worked there more consistently, I was sort of the Emergency Girl. I would hold down the fort while the other girls had something awesome to do. Like go to the City. Or to Fashion Shows. Or get married. (Twice).
I wore this on one of the days that someone got married. I can’t remember who it was, but I had to work by myself.
Usually I would try to not wear something from Express there, but I liked my outfit. I wore this with my most favorite cardigan, black tights and flat boots, and a fringe-y, turquoise scarf that I was obsessed with then. It was a great fall outfit!
Now that I’m trying to recall that day, I’m not having much luck. Pretty much I just remember being alone. Slightly bored. A little apprehensive that we might get a giant rush of people and I would have a panic attack.
But, nothing happened. It was fine. I think someone may have come to help me in between the wedding and reception.
This summer I wore this after a performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. That show was madness, and addictive, and crazy amounts of fun! A great cast, frenetic pacing, and a gifted director, my friend Lisa. Plus, I got to wear a red Mohawk and a tutu!
The hair, I kind of miss. The tutu, I kept.
This time I wore the dress by itself, with a long, lariat-ish necklace, and these boots:

It was one of the first times I had worn real heels after my surgery. For a long time, even after I had little or no pain from anything else, it was still painful to wear heels.
Thank goodness that’s behind me!
The ensemble really looked awesome after the show, with my psycho-slut makeup and teased out hair. Sadly, I can’t remember if we did anything after the show or not.
Today is just a day of limited remembering.
But I did get to play with lots of clothes! After the boutique, I went back to the gym for a few hours, then straight to the Center for a Bye Bye Birdie photo shoot. The cast looks great! I’m so excited for this show.
I guess that explains the limited remembering. It’s been a long day, and I’m beat. To bed with me!
Oh! The dress. I like it. It fits like a glove, the kind of glove that you have to expel every breath from your body to get into, and even then it’s touch and go, and takes at least 10 minutes.
But once the glove is on, breathing is possible! It feels fine, honest. It’s sort of like a corset. Who doesn’t love a corset?

**This is one of my favorites. It stays!
